[edit] Developer Tools

There are a number of tools that can make it more comfortable to work within FileMaker. One of the tools I personally recommend (at least on the Macintosh) is a keyboard macro program. I personally use both QuicKeys from Startly and iKey from Script Software

Another other useful tool for Macintosh developers is FMMenulet from Huslik Verlag GmbH. This is an indicator of when the Debugger in FileMaker Advanced is turned on or off.

If you're using Windows and you're tired some of the same old routine tasks of database development then you can save time with these steps and a few more.

  • Save and restore Data Viewer sets
  • Visual indication if script debugger is on or off
  • Define default script steps that go in each new script
  • One-click, add a new blank layout with no header or footer
  • Create a list of your favorite script steps and functions
  • Maintain a list of the variables you use (and insert them with a simple click)
  • Have a floating color palette that stays open as long as you want it to
  • Copy an RGB(x,x,x) string from the color palette to use in FileMaker's text formatting functions
